Rolled Butter Cookies & Glaze

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter (do not substitute margarine)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

  1. Cream butter.
  2. Gradually add sugar and cream well.
  3. Blend in egg, then add baking soda, baking powder, milk, salt and vanilla.
  4. Gradually add flour and mix well.
  5. If necessary, you may chill the dough.
  6. Roll out 1/3 at a time on a floured surface to 1/8 inch.
  7. Cut in desired shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  8. Bake 5 to 7 minutes at 375°.

Note: These cookies bake very fast. They also taste better if you use butter rather than margarine. They can be decorated with frosting or a glaze.

Making the Glaze

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons cream or milk

Directions:

  1. Add vanilla to confectioner's sugar.
  2. Add cream gradually and beat until frosting is of right consistency for decorating or spreading.

Variations: Color, divide into several parts placing each in a bowl. Tint each part with food coloring as desired. Flavor - omit vanilla, add a few drops of peppermint, wintergreen, orange, lemon or other flavoring.
